Travel Blog: Frozen, February 1

There might be people that don't like cold weather.
But being below 0C (32F) for months has advantages as well.

You can drive up a lake for ice fishing or just drifting. There also are lots of sports on the ice. I watched a pond hockey tournament a drift race, where 4-wheelers and enduros race in a lap. Also I will be playing Kickball and broom ball on the ice next week.

Last weekend two very good friends (Matt and Marcus) took me out sturgeon spearing on lake Winnebago. Thats a short time event, where basically everybody gets up at 6 AM to sit in front of a hole in the ice in a completely sunlight blocked room. Then in our shed we had 2 heavy spears which you are always ready to throw as soon as you see a shadow of a sturgeon to pass. We had a nice little propane cooker, to heat us some drinks and food. I made Glühwein with red wine, oranges, cinnamon and cloves. It was definitely a hit.
One in our group caught a ~100Lbs? sturgeon. The biggest one caught was 148Lbs and around 60years? old.
The weather was around -15C (5F). So too cold for keeping your beer outside :)

I had lots of fun this weekend and I am looking forward to do it again someday.
